MR William "Bill" Evans
B coy 2nd battalion South Wales Borderers.
may he rest easy, he is finally joined with his comrades that he spoke so highly of and honoured for so many years!
RIP
MR Bill Evans
1920 - 23/08/2014
We were fortunate enough to meet Bill back in 2009,
He invited us to stand on parade with him and nudged us to sing our national anthem (land of my fathers) with him as he is usually the only one. This was a very proud and honourable moment for all of us.
We then listened to Bills stories for a while,
When we were due to return to Normandy on the 70th anniversary Mikey Stoneman got in contact with Bill after losing contact detail over the years, to let him know we where going, but found out that Bill was too ill to make the trip. Bill had had a stroke 9 months before.
Mikey and Tom Sellen drove five and a half hours to see Bill in full battle order kit as he would of worn 70 years ago,
They chatted with Bill all day listening to his stories sat and had tea and sandwiches with Bill and his wife Pat.
Bill asked them to do him a favour and lay his wreath at the SWB memorial at Asnelles and put his signed poppy crosses on some of his comrades graves,
Needles to say we were honoured to do this for him,
Bill was a larger than life character was very talkative and loved his family and life,
even when Mike and Tom went to see him he had the stroke,
but he still had his squdie attitude and sence of humour he knew exactly what he wanted to tell us but couldn't get the words out, we helped fill in the blanks for him, and it was a true honour to be in our heroes presence.
Raise a glass and toast..... Mr Bill Evans a true hero and a gentleman he will surly be missed.
